Niagara Wedding Planner- Pro vs. DIY Florals

Many couples will try to find any way they can to save money on their wedding day. DIY has become a huge trend lately and there a lots of brides opting to DIY certain aspects of their wedding to save on costs. Is DIYing your floral arrangements a good idea? See below to make the decision for yourself.

how to save money on wedding flowers

Pro

DIY

  • Gets flowers at wholesale prices
  • Knows how to make your flowers last for the whole day.
  • Knows which flowers tend to hold up the best for the duration of the day
  • Knows which flowers are in season, which saves you money
  • Sets up all of your arrangements at your venue
  • Has access to a proper cooler and air conditioned van to protect flowers
  • Can be expensive if you have a lot of arrangements
  • Has Experience
  • You may or may not save money. You have to buy flowers at retail prices.
  • You have to assemble all bouquets, centerpieces, and arrangements.
  • You have to transport all of the arrangements and worry about keeping them cool enough.
  • Your flowers might not hold up all day long.
  • You have to purchase the vases for the cernterpieces which is pricey.
  • If some of your flowers die during the day, do you have extras to replace them?
  • Who will be the one going around and replacing the flowers while you are busy before the reception?

I don’t believe that saving money on flowers by DIYing is your best option. There are so many things that can go wrong when working with any fresh product. Unless someone very close to you has a green thumb and is willing to do everything for you, skip the stress and hire a professional.  Even if you do have someone with that talent, do you really want them to work on your wedding day or enjoy it like everyone else? If you want to save money on florals, ask your florist which flowers are in season, and what some cheaper filler flowers are. A good florist will work with you to help you stay within your (realistic) budget.

Niagara Wedding Planner- Pro vs. DIY Photography

Most people wouldn’t dream of DIYing their wedding photography, but some people do consider it as an option. DIY doesn’t necessarily mean they are taking their own photos, but they are hiring someone who doesn’t do this as a profession.

Pro

DIY

  • Has experience
  • Knows how to properly pose couples and wedding party to get the best shots.
  • Knows what times work best according to lighting, etc.
  • Knows when to expect certain moments to happen and can make sure to catch them on camera.
  • Will handle situations that pop up unexpectedly.
  • Has ALL of the proper equipment needed, not just a “good camera”.
  • Will fully edit your photos so you get the best professional quality.
  • You save money.
  • You have to worry about getting the shots you want to get for the day which adds more stress for you.
  • You rely on your guests to take photos of you.
  • Situations may arise that you have to take care of.
  • Camera could have a technical difficulty and you don’t have a backup.
  • You have to try to learn how to use an editing program if you want to try and get professional quality.
  • You may have to purchase an editing program (Adobe Photoshop is $800 +)

I really believe you should always consider hiring a professional when it comes to photography. Photos are some of the only keepsakes you will actually have forever. Make sure you don’t miss the opportunity to capture the moments that mean the most to you. Photography is an investment in a memory.

Pro

DIY

  • We do most of the work.
  • We suggest vendors from our files. We already know who you should and should not work with and have spent time building relationships with them.
  • We keep you on a realistic budget.
  • We keep you on schedule, letting you know what to book and when.
  • We take care of the logistics, allowing you to focus on the fun stuff.
  • When unexpected events happen, we deal with it before you even know about it.
  • We oversee your entire day from start to finish to ensure that if anything does go wrong, it gets fixed right away. We also have tools and insight to prevent unwanted events to happen.
  • We live and breathe weddings. Our knowledge in the industry allows us to be on top of everything.
  • You do everything.
  • You spend time searching through numerous vendors all claiming to be the best in the business. Being a first time planner, you don’t know from experience who you should go with.
  • Couples tend to overspend. Costs can also be surprising and can be more or less then you’d expect.
  • Planning can be a lot. Tie that in work, family, and having a life, planning can get off track and leave to rushing at the last minute.
  • Planning becomes a task when dealing with the who, what, where, when, and why of weddings. Couples tend to breeze over the fun, creative aspects of the planning process.
  • When unexpected events happen, you deal with it.
  • There is no one to oversee your day or prevent unwanted events from happening.

A good wedding planner is certified. We take the time to constantly improve our knowledge in all aspects of a wedding. A good wedding planner is worth the investment. If you choose to go with any vendor based on price, ensure that they are qualified and have recommendations to back them up. Never choose price over quality, it can end up being worse then doing something yourself.
